What's better, Doubles or Aloo Pie?

For a larger view of the photo, please click here

Heyy guys, what you all had for breakfast this morning? Let me guess? A Doubles?? lol!

I have been doing some research on the anatomy of the ultimate street food in T&T which can be eaten at any time of the day.. Doubles! Here in T & T, Doubles and all other Indian Delicacies such as Saheena, Bhaiganie, Kachorie and Poulorie play a major role in our cosmopolitan nation or as I like to call it, 'callaloo' since T&T is blessed with various cultures and everyone humbly enjoys the foods from each cultural background.

Since Trinis' enjoy not one but two wholesome doubles almost everyday, we wonder how this affects their health. So, I have done my research on the benefits of doubles and aloo pie to find out which is better.

You maybe thinking aloo pies are healthy to eat, however according to Chef Meg Galvin  from Spark Recipes, if you eat one doubles you will have ingested 345 calories, 11.8 grams of fat, 997.9 mg of sodium, 51 grams of carbs, two grams of fiber and 9.6 grams of protein. Doubles has no cholesterol. However, the aloo in the aloo pie when fried increases its carbs and fat, not to mention the thickness of an aloo pie as compared to a doubles bara. There’s no cholesterol, but there’s high protein and less fat than a pie. Throw in some nice cucumber, mango or tamarind chutney and you even have some similarity of a fruit or vegetable for breakfast.

Ten Super Foods to Boost Your Health and Immune System

Want to know what super foods to eat when your body is feeling the pressures of everyday working and want something to boost your health? Well you can have some of the following foods, I personally love the chocolate option  but have tried all options multiple times... Lets check them out!

Super foods are a sure way to achieve longevity and control weight.  We should also remember that these super foods are most potent when eaten in their raw state – with little to no commercial processing – or in their organic form. Cooking also depletes their potency or vitamin content, enzymes, co-enzymes, protein, minerals and glyconutrients. For this reason, most super foods are also made into medicine.

1. RAW CHOCOLATE (CACAO)

There is no harvest season for this food, the cocoa tree bears its fruit all year long. Raw cacao(commonly called cocoa or chocolate) has been known to rejuvenate and remove that lethargic feeling. Raw cacao has most of its nutrients intact, unlike commercial chocolate. During processing, commercial chocolate loses most of its special properties – specifically through the heating process. Thus raw cacao is recommended. It has the highest amounts of flavoring and extremely high amounts of magnesium. It is also rich in chromium, manganese, and an excellent source of zinc.
The most popular benefit of cocoa is that it supports a healthy cardiovascular system. Other benefits are increase brain blood flow, and enhance brain function. The antioxidant properties in cocoa can protect us from age-related health conditions and free-radical damage to our DNA. Some more benefits of raw cocoa: are relief from menstrual cramping, building strong bones, help detoxify heavy metals, promote normal blood pressure, improve blood lipids, and reduce inflammation. Cocoa is considered a great super food for children because of it helps release certain neurotransmitters that can greatly impact mood and help reduce stress levels. It can also help relax the blood vessels.
Cocoa was once King of Trinidad with some of the best cocoa coming from this country, but now much is left to be seen as it struggles to be remembered amidst an industrialised and technologically driven society. Trinidad cocoa is most prized because of its high quality, fine flavor, and distinct fruity taste. Also, a careful post-harvest processing technique ensures a unique blend. Despite, its high quality and high demand, the cocoa industry in Trinidad has experienced a considerable decline over the years, and any reclaim of its more prosperous years seem for many unlikely, because of the difficulty of overcoming the many of the contributing elements of its own downfall.

2. FLAXSEED

Flaxseed has many uses: such as food, medicine and fiber. Flaxseed is a rich source of omega-6 fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid, phytoestrogens (known as lignans), and omega-3 faatty acids. It is a good source of magnesium, potassium, manganese, and dietary fiber. It contains twice as much omega-3 as fish oil. Omega-3 has been known to reduce the risk of arteriosclerosis. Flaxseed can help lower cholesterol, reduce arterial plaque formation, reduce breast cancer, relieve constipation and reduce digestive distress and reduce the discomfort of menopause. It is anti-flammatory and can therefore help lower cholesterol. Flaxseed can also aid in weight loss. One tablespoon of flaxseed with every meal can ensure you feel full with less calories.
3. COCONUT

Another local super food is coconut. Earlier, we had written an extensive article on the health benefits of coconut. So, it cannot be stressed enough about the importance of coconut – coconut water, coconut oil, and the coconut meat. Coconut water helps with both hydration and alkalinity. This delicious drink is a rich source of electrolytes. The coconut meat in its early stages contains lauric acid, known for its beneficial antimicrobial effects. The oil from coconut meat do not contain trans-fatty acids. Most of the saturated fat in coconut oil consists of medium chain fatty acids, and area  less likely to be stored in the body as fat. Instead, it can actually help you burn more fat, normalize body lipids, and protect against liver damages. It can also improve the immune system’s anti-inflammatory response.  Coconut oil is both antiviral and antibacterial.

4. GREEN TEA

Green tea is another super food that is loaded with polyphenols and antioxidants. It has high amounts of vitamins C,D and K, riboflavin, good amounts of minerals, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, sodium, nickel and fluoride. Green tea has many health benefits: it may help prevent inflammatory diseases and stomach ulcers via the polyphenols; it may protect against Alzheimer’s disease; it is useful as a glucose regulator – slowing the rise in blood sugar after a meal – and thus minimize food cravings, and reduce the risk of certain cancers. Green tea may also help ensure cardiovascular and oral health. Studies show that the catechins, a sub-class of flavonoids or antioxidant compounds in green tea can help lower body fat and cholesterol.

5. NONI

The noni fruit, commonly called morinda, indian mulberry, hog apple, and canary wood, makes a healthy fruit drink. Most times it is combined with another fruit. This fruit has antioxidant, immune-stimulating and tumor-fighting properties. ome research suggest that the noni fruit can help treat or prevent breast cancer. Other health benefits of this fruit is that it is an effective guard against high blood pressure. Cardiovascular disease and diabetes. However, if you have kidney problems, you may have to avoid noni because it is high in potassium.

6. ALOE VERA
Another is Aloe Vera. Research has identified numerous compounds in this plant that makes it a super food. It contains natural steroids, antibiotic agents, amino acids, minerals and enzymes. The juice from the aloe vera plant aids keeping the digestive tract healthy, and thus avoid indigestion, acid reflux, heartburn and ulcers. The aloe’s plant is considered the “Elixir of Longevity“.

7.SEA WEED

Another super food is sea weed, which is one of the most nutritionally dense plants on the planet.  It is also loaded with minerals. Seaweed is high in calcium, antioxidants, iodine and chlorophyll.  Thus it has powerful chelating properties.  It can help purify the blood and detox heavy metals from the body. It can also help alkalize the blood and boost weight loss by stimulating the thyroid gland and maintaining a healthy metabolism.

8. LENTILS

Lentils are high in protein. It also contains other nutrtitional properties. It has a high nutritional value. It can help treat constipation, act as a diuretic; it is antifungal and can protect the teeth from decay. Other health benefits of lentils is that it may reduce LDL (harmful cholesterol) in the body and improve bowel movement.

9. CELERY

Celery is another super food that is an excellent source of vitamin C , fiber and potassium.  It also has other nutritional compounds. It is a good source of calcium and vitamin B2. Celery has a phytochemical compound called coumarins, which can help prevent cancer and lower high blood pressure and cholesterol. It also has positive effects in reducing joint pain and so can be used to treat “rheumatism”.Another ingredient in celery is 3-n-butyl phthalide which can lower blood pressure, and thus lower the stress hormones that causes high blood pressure.

10. GINGER ROOT

The tenth super food is a traditional aphrodisiac, as well as a flavor enhancer.  It has antioxidant properties which has shown to lower cholesterol, prevent oxidation and slow atherosclerosis.  It is historically known to effectively alleviate symptoms of gastrointestinal distress.  It also has antioxidant properties and anti-inflammatory properties.  The anti-inflammatory compound in ginger is called gingerols.

The one vitamin you should take in your 30s (and 40s, 50s, 60s)

Hey everyone, how yall doing? Check out my post on vitamins and the essential vitamins you need for different age groups...
Hope this info is beneficial to you and your loved ones!

If you’re trying to get pregnant in your 30s, it’s important to increase your intake of folic acid, which (in addition to reducing the likelihood of certain birth defects) reduces your likelihood of having a heart attack or stroke. If you’re trying not to get pregnant and you’re on birth control, you might want to up your zinc and magnesium intake since some forms of prescription contraception can deplete your body of those minerals.

Vitamin D is important for everyone, but an adequate supply in your 40s is especially crucial, since vitamin D deficiencies often correlate with illnesses that typically first appear in your 40s like cancer, osteoporosis and heart disease.

Essential for blood and brain function, vitamin B12 starts to be more poorly absorbed by the body starting at around age 50, making it important to up your intake. You should also start taking a multivitamin specifically for women over 50, which have less iron than multivitamins for younger women and additional B12 to adjust to your body’s changing needs.

In your 60's Post-menopause, it’s crucial to get enough potassium to decrease your risk of stroke. On top of that, sexagenarians should aim to take omega-3s, which may help relieve symptoms of arthritis.

Check Out These Eight Foods That Keep You Fuller Longer!

Guys wassup? Check out these highly nutritious foods that keeps you fuller for longer and can be found at your nearby supermarket. I have tried all eight and I can definitely tell you they work like a charm, especially for those with a busy schedule you can take in a big bite of the following;

1) EGGS

There's a reason people are clucking about eggs lately. A recent study from the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, LA, found that overweight people who ate eggs for breakfast take longer to get hungry later.  "Eggs are a perfect combination of protein and fat, so they're more satisfying than other breakfast foods," says Julie Kaye, MPH, RD, CDN, a registered dietitian in New York City. Worried about cholesterol? Don't be. "Despite the high content in yolks, eggs aren't the main culprit in raising blood cholesterol," explains Kaye. If you're still concerned, try liquid egg whites, which also contain protein and can stave off hunger.
Who doesn't love a good ole hard boiled egg for breakfast or anytime during the day? Wellll, you guys can try this anyway you like to keep you fuller longer! :)

2) AVOCADOS

The green, creamy flesh of an avocado isn't just tasty—it's also filled with fiber and heart-healthy monounsaturated fat. In other words, avocados might be the perfect fill-you-up food. "Foods high in fiber and rich in fat take longer to digest, allowing you to experience less overall hunger—and possibly take in fewer calories," says Erin Palinski, RD, CDE, LDN, CPT, author of the forthcoming Belly Fat Diet for Dummies. Research also shows that avocados' oleic acid, a monounsaturated fat, tells your brain that your stomach is full. Just remember that, nutritious as they are, avocados are high in calories—stick to snacking on half the fruit (about 140 calories) each time.
Awesome info right??? When is zaboca season again btw? Gorsh I can not wait, this is one of my fav Trini fruit and I can have this for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a snack! Whats your fav zaboca dish? :)

3) LEGUMES

A serving of beans, lentils, chickpeas or even peanuts delivers the right feel-full combo of lean protein, complex carbs and good fats. According to Julie McGinnis, MS, RD, a registered dietitian, certified herbalist and owner of The Gluten Free Bistro in Boulder, CO, research has shown that this trio can keep blood sugar stable. "And stable blood sugar means getting a full feeling—and keeping it," she says.
Allyuh ent doubles is made with chickpeas??? :D

4) CAYENNE PEPPER

This potent spice is a proven appetite suppressant. Researchers from Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN, found that people who added half a teaspoon of the red pepper to a meal ate 60 fewer calories at their next meal. Bonus: Sprinkling half a teaspoon of cayenne pepper over some food can cause your body to burn an extra 10 calories. Ay, caramba!
Which Trini doesn't love any kind of pepper in their dish??: Great info guys! Check out the next 4 awesome foods....

5) WATER

There are lots of reasons to raise your glass for water. H2O is critical for keeping organs, joints, tissues and the digestive system functioning well, but it can also curb hunger, says Elizabeth DeRobertis, MS, RD, CDN, CDE, a registered dietitian in Harrison, NY. In fact, one study showed that participants who drank two cups of water before a meal ate 75 – 90 fewer calories than people who drank no water at all.
I think many Trini's wanting to shed a few extra pounds may be already aware of this trick! ;) Cheers to some H2O guys!

6) GREEK YOGURT

Rich in calcium and low in sugar, Greek yogurt is protein-packed—a typical six-ounce serving has 15 – 20 grams, which is twice the amount in regular yogurt and about the same as in a piece of lean meat. "The protein in foods is one of the main factors in feeling satisfied," says Kaye. "Protein-rich foods also contain some fat in varying amounts, which also keeps you full for a longer period."
Dahi it is!! :D

7) SOUP

Eat more soup, experience fewer cravings? Absolutely, according to recent research from Pennsylvania State University. In the study, women who ate a serving of low-calorie chicken and vegetable soup as a morning snack (don't knock it 'til you've tried it!) ate 100 fewer calories at lunch than women who started their day with chicken-and-rice casserole. You can thank soup's high water content for that full feeling—though the fiber-filled veggies and hot temperature don't hurt (dietitians say that sipping warm liquids can curb your appetite). Make sure to slurp broth-based soups, not creamy ones, which can be fatty and highly caloric, says DeRobertis.
Don't forget to add Maggi Soup it Up! :)

8) ALMONDS

All nuts have heart-healthy fats, but almonds contain the most fiber per serving, which can keep you fuller, longer. "Eating about 15 almonds between lunch and dinner can stave off that 4 P.M. energy dip, helping you avoid those cookies in the break room," says Kaye. Interestingly, one study suggested that our bodies may not absorb all of the fat in almonds, which might lead to an overall lower calorie intake when eating them. Still, don't overload on these snacks. "Eating too many almonds spoils your appetite for your next meal and contributes significant calories to your daily intake," says Kaye.
Guys did your grand mother ever tell you that almonds boost your brain power? Well that's another great reason to have some almonds together with keeping you fuller longer! :)
